Exact copies versus similar images

Identical file contents can appear under different names. Messenger resizing, edits, exposure changes and adjacent shots produce different files that may look similar.

What to keep

Inspect resolution, compression, faces and context. A RAW original and a JPEG export may both be useful; an edit may be intentional. Do not pick only by filename or file size.

Work in stages

Back up first. Start with exact copies, then review similar shots at full size. Move uncertain candidates to a temporary folder rather than immediately deleting them. Check the sorting plan and keep History available for undo.
